Breaking News!! The Syrian Chemical Weapon Watchdog OPCW wins the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize

The Syrian Chemical watchdog aka The OPCW (Organisation for the prohibition of Chemical weapons)  has just been announced winner of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

The OPCW based in the Hague – Holland was created to enforce the 1997 Chemical’s Weapon Convention. Their win is based on their success in dismantling Syria’s stockpile of chemical weapons. ( Now that is a blog post for another day…)

Their win comes with a gold medal and $1.25m (£780.000).

This comes as a surprise to many who predicted that schoolgirl Malala Yousufzei was going to take home the trophy. Malala is the Pakistani schoolgirl who was deliberately shot by Taliban militants to prevent her from going to school. Today she is a teen activist fighting for girls’ educational rights  in her native Pakistan and around the world.
