Documenting the journey of a Cameroonian filmmaker

Na wa oh! These celebrities lied about their age.

Back in my secondary school days, it was common to hear rumours that so-and-so had shaved a few years off their real age due one circumstance or other. Later on in life, I could see the rationale behind this and actually wished my parents had the foresight to shave a few years off my age. This would have opened up a lot of opportunities to me when I finally moved over to Europe. Alas!

A quick look at the global entertainment industry revealed that actually  a few people went down that route too.

Onika Tanya Maraj, known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, had told anyone who would listen that she was actually two years younger than her real age, until a fight in late 2011 revealed the bombshell. Police reports revealed that the overtly gimmicky  Trinidian-born rapper who claimed to be 26 was actually 28 at the time.

Controversial American Rapper Marshall Bruce Mathers III, better known by his stage name Eminem told popular US Radio host Howard in 1999 that he was 24, when he was in fact 27. Born in October 17, 1972, Eminem turns 41 this year. Wow! He looks good for his age I must admit.

Jennifer Lynn Muñiz known by her stage name Jennifer Lopez is an American singer and business woman who shaved quite a few years off her birth date. When she appeared on the scene in the early 2000’s, JLO told anyone who would listen that she was born in 1970… until she and then boyfriend P. Diddy had were questioned by NYPD,  when the bubble bursts. NYPD revealed that JLO was actually 10 years older. JLo was actually born on July 24th, 1960 which makes her 44 years old now. But man does she look good. And plus she’s dating a young man who’s almost half her age. *The ngah really try for e sabi.*

Former Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Prescovia Elikolani Valiente Scherzinger known by her stage name Nicole Sherzinger also told a fib or two about her age. Born June 29, 1978, Nicole listed her age on her website in 2008 as 28. When caught and asked about it, the gorgeous singer replied ” I should’ve said 27.” She makes no apologies.

The list of celebs who chose this path is actually quite long. I’m not putting up their real ages to criticize them for their decisions, just like changing your name in showbiz, I think taking off a few years will open more doors. It certainly did for the above. Would you shave a few years off your age if it would help to advance your career?

It seems a very good thing our parents ought to have done for our doors to stay open a wee bit longer. I remember i know one very old face that was the youngest or say almost the youngest down my memory lane. However one can run away from old age, it doesnt matter how much we fight it. love the article and i cant wait to read more to find out who is who

I know right. If only our parents had the foresight. Haha!

I think it works most times to reduce ur age. At the end of the day isnt it good to feel younger just by saying a younger age?

I like this article, but I’m afraid it contains a factual error. A person born in 1960 would be fifty-three, not forty-four, this year. I’m no authority, but most sources indicate Jennifer Lopez knocked off a mere one year, and that she was born in 1969 instead of 1970, so she’s forty-four instead of forty-three.
