Documenting the journey of a Cameroonian filmmaker
I have personally often felt that Winnie Mandela was vilified by the press. It is sad to see how the world seems to have forgotten about this strong black African woman who tirelessly fought to keep the struggle alive while her husband, Nelson Mandela (the supposed hero) was in prison. The world refuses to celebrate this woman who was equally stigmatised, traumatized and even tortured for a fight she started out of love for her husband. I can’t tell you how glad and relieved I am that someone decided to tell her story. Those who know me, know I certainly do not regard Nelson Mandela as the hero the rest of the world wants us to believe he is.
Singer and Oscar-winning actress, Jennifer Hudson will be playing the role of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in an upcoming biopic based on her life as the wife of former South African president, Nelson Mandela (played by Terrence Howard). Directed by Darrell James Roodt, the film is based on Winnie’s biography, Winnie Mandela: A Life.
Winnie is expected to be released some time in early 2011.
